Pigeon Guano Removal and Specialist Cleaning at Historic Site

How our specialist team delivered a safe, controlled and fully compliant cleaning solution within a sensitive heritage environment.

The Context

DC Group was appointed to carry out specialist cleaning works at The Citadel in Dover, a historic site with multiple rooms affected by pigeon guano contamination and general build-up. The project followed earlier works on site and required a consistent, carefully managed approach appropriate for a sensitive environment.

The Challenge

Pigeon guano presents recognised health risks and must be removed in line with strict safety and environmental guidelines. Working within a historic setting added further considerations, requiring careful handling, controlled cleaning methods and attention to the condition of the building.

The project also required clear processes to prevent cross-contamination between areas, alongside the safe management and disposal of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste.

The Solution

Our trained operatives carried out a structured and methodical cleaning process, using colour-coded equipment to maintain hygiene control and prevent cross-contamination.

Pigeon guano was safely removed, followed by a thorough deep clean of all affected areas, including surfaces and furniture. Waste streams were carefully segregated and disposed of in full compliance with regulatory requirements.

Strict health and safety procedures were followed throughout, including the correct use of PPE and the safe handling of cleaning agents. Controlled techniques were used at all stages, with regular rotation of cloths and cleaning solutions to ensure consistent results while protecting the environment.

All work was recorded on site, and equipment was cleaned and properly stored after use.

The Outcome

The affected areas were restored to a clean, safe and hygienic condition, suitable for ongoing use and management within a public sector setting.

The project was completed efficiently and in full compliance with relevant standards, providing reassurance that the site had been handled with care, professionalism and respect for its historic nature.
