Commercial Sewage Remediation and Air Quality Control in Confined Space

How our specialist team delivered a safe, fully controlled decontamination in a high-risk pool house environment.

The Context

DC Group was instructed to carry out a full specialist decontamination following a significant sewage leak at a commercial pool house facility. Contamination had affected both the internal environment and associated underground void areas, creating a serious biological and airborne risk.

The presence of vulnerable and elderly occupants on site increased the need for a carefully managed and safety-led response.

  • Sector: Commercial
  • Service Provided: Sewage remediation, sanitisation and decontamination, air quality control
  • Client: Anonymous
  • Location: South East England
  • Nature of Work: Specialist emergency response
  • Timescale: Structured programme with monitored clearance

The Challenge

The situation involved multiple high-risk factors, including sewage contamination, confined space working and compromised air quality. The underground crawl space, approximately 20 metres in length, required specialist access and handling due to restricted conditions and contamination levels.

There was also a critical need to prevent the spread of airborne contaminants to surrounding areas, while ensuring the environment could be safely restored for continued use.

Strict compliance with health and safety procedures, including confined space regulations and air quality management, was essential throughout.

The Solution

Our initial recommendation was to isolate and seal the affected pool house area to contain contamination and protect adjacent spaces. Surrounding areas were assessed to confirm they remained safe.

Specialist operatives carried out the removal of sewage contamination within the confined underground void, supported by detailed investigation and photographic reporting. A combination of pressure washing, steam cleaning and plant-based sanitising agents was used to achieve a thorough decontamination.

Internally, the pool house underwent a full deep clean and sanitisation. Air scrubbers and controlled airflow systems were deployed to manage and improve air quality, supported by ongoing bacterial and air monitoring until safe clearance levels were reached.

All works were delivered under strict safety controls, including full PPE, respiratory protection, confined space procedures and continuous communication systems. A dedicated operative remained outside the void to provide safety oversight.

Additional control measures included fresh air supply, controlled extraction, defined decontamination zones and environmental monitoring such as ATP testing.

The Outcome

All contaminated areas were safely treated and restored to a clean, controlled and compliant condition. Air quality was successfully stabilised and verified through monitoring, ensuring the environment was safe for reoccupation.

The project was delivered through a structured and carefully managed programme, minimising risk and providing the client with confidence that all works had been completed to the highest safety and compliance standards.
